What’s changing?

Microsoft is moving away from SMS and phone-call verification and introducing passkeys as a more secure and easier way to sign in.

From 1 September 2026 – Microsoft will begin encouraging affected users to set up a passkey.

From 1 February 2027 – Microsoft’s existing SMS and phone-call verification service will be retired.

What’s a passkey?

A passkey lets your phone or computer securely confirm it’s you.

Instead of:

Password → SMS code → enter the code

You may simply use:

Face ID, fingerprint or your mobile device PIN

Passkeys can also be stored on your mobile phone. If you’re signing into Microsoft 365 on another computer, you may be able to scan a QR code with your phone and approve the sign-in.

Why is Microsoft changing this?

SMS security codes can be stolen or tricked out of users by cyber criminals.

Passkeys are much harder to steal because there’s no security code for you to give to someone else, making them much more resistant to phishing.

Do I need to do anything?

Not yet. Medic Cloud IT Support will assist customers with the transition and may contact you when changes to your Microsoft 365 account are required.

If Microsoft asks you to configure a new sign-in method and you’re unsure what to do, contact Medic Cloud IT Support for assistance.

The important part – You won’t suddenly lose access to Microsoft 365.

The change begins in September 2026, and Microsoft’s existing SMS and phone-call verification service isn’t scheduled to retire until February 2027.
