Home » Cyclone Alfred Preparation and Precaution Measures for Clinics
With tropical Cyclone Alfred approaching parts of Queensland and New South Wales, clinics in affected regions must take immediate precautions to safeguard their equipment.
X-ray equipment and Information Technology (IT) systems are at risk from power disruptions, electrical storms, and potential flooding. Follow these recommendations to protect your equipment and minimise risks.
For clinics in other areas, this blog can serve as a good resource in case of future weather emergencies.

Cyclone Alfred preparation – How to do it?
Here are some points to consider when preparing for this unprecedented weather event:
Power protection measures
- Turn off all equipment when not in use and switch off power at the wall, not just via the device’s shutdown function.
- Unplug equipment from mains power to prevent transient voltage surges caused by electrical storms or powerline damage.
- If your facility has a main switchboard, turn off circuits supplying power to critical equipment.
- Ensure backup generators or Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) are fully charged and operational.
X-ray equipment precautions
If your clinic has x-ray machines, take extra steps to minimise potential damage:
- Power down all x-ray systems and switch them off at the mains or isolator.
In flood-prone areas, implement these protective measures:
- Raise the wall Bucky (if it contains an HDR panel) to its highest position.
- Rotate the x-ray tube downward and raise it to its maximum height.
- Move computers and accessories off the floor onto desks or higher surfaces.

Internet Failover Preparation
Severe weather can disrupt internet connectivity. To stay connected:
- Purchase a 4G wireless dongle as a backup internet solution. These devices are available at Officeworks, JB Hi-Fi, and some supermarkets like Coles.
- Ensure your router or firewall supports failover functionality, allowing seamless switching to 4G if your primary internet connection fails.
Insurance Considerations
- Review your insurance policy to confirm coverage for storm, flood, and electrical surge damage.
- Contact your insurance provider or broker to verify your coverage and understand the claims process.
